For the construction industry, using software to review and markup plans comes with a number of benefits including being able to collaborate on plans in realtime from anywhere, making it easier to share data between the office and the jobsite. One piece of software is able to do this—and integrate with a plan table—and has been acquired by a big player in the construction-technology space.

SmartUse, www.smartuse.com, Montreal, Que., provides PDF reviewing software and the SmartUse Touch Table for the construction industry, and has been acquired by Newforma, www.newforma.com, Manchester, N.H.

With SmartUse’s reviewing software, construction companies can collaborate on plans in realtime on any device, including using a digital pen, computers, tablets, and the SmartUse Touch Table.

The Touch Table gives construction companies the opportunity to markup plans in the jobsite trailer and work on drawings at the actual size. Once a change is marked up, it is available for others to see.

With technology such as this, construction companies are able to go paperless, as information can be accessed on any device. This ultimately helps accelerate the workflow and collaboration, allowing projects to be completed on schedule.

The technology has been acquired by Newforma—which is an interesting move for the project information management software provider. The company, which offers project-management technology for the AEC (architecture, engineering, and construction) space is now bringing PDF reviewing technology into its fold.

Newforma is no stranger to acquisition—though it has been some time since it has made a big acquisition such as this. Back in August 2012, Newforma announced it entered into an agreement to acquire Attolist, a provider of AEC-Sync Web-based construction collaboration software that integrates information for the entire project team. This acquisition provided Newforma with a greater selection of on-premise and cloud-based technologies to better manage project delivery.

Watching Newforma, the company has made moves through product development and acquisition to provide the construction industry with more options for managing project information.

Now, with SmartUse, construction companies have the added benefit of using PDF reviewing software on Touch Tables in the office or jobsite trailer. It will be interesting to see how this move shakes out.
