One of the long-standing debates in technology revolves around the question of going with either best-of-breed or fully integrated solutions. Construction companies opting for the latter have had more and more options at their disposal these days, and one of the more well-known providers of such software is making news with an upgrade this week.

Maxwell Systems,, King of Prussia, Pa., released Maxwell Systems ProContractorMX version 3.1. This new release centers on improved capabilities in the areas of intercompany transactions, change management, lien management, and reporting, among other areas.

ProContractorMX features some new functionality designed to enhance productivity from the field. For example, its Field Order Management module helps users create and manage project field orders for employees, equipment, and materials. As the industry becomes more mobile and looks to complete tasks in the field, this becomes a nice value-added feature. Due to the new and flexible architecture on which Maxwell Systems has constructed the software, such an addition becomes easier for the vendor to develop.

Speaking of mobile, another interesting enhancement is the fact ProContractorMX version 3.1 supports Microsoft Windows 8. This speaks to a larger trend that is developing in construction around the adoption of this mobile operating system.

While stalwarts Android and Apple’s iOS still take the lion’s share of the mobile adoption in construction, new numbers show Microsoft Windows 8 is gaining considerable traction. In fact, numbers from the newly released 2013 Constructech IT Playbook show this mobile platform has moved past even BlackBerry among the survey respondents when it comes to mobile.

Other new features in ProContractorMX include a scheduler which helps to manage resources more efficiently; lien notices and releases that include sales tax; the ability to track retainage throughout the construction lifecycle; and new enhancements for customer invoices, among others.

The collaborative functionality of the system is addressed as well, with new reporting for subcontract change orders helps users identify commitments and changes more efficiently. Likewise, the product includes a streamlined process for managing vendor invoices, payments, and transactions.
