With its latest event, Apple, www.apple.com, is dominating the tech feeds once again. As reports about the news spread, alongside rumors of Apple stores removing competitors’ devices from its shelves, we’re left wondering and waiting for what Apple Watch and Apple Pay might mean for the construction market—and particularly, for the wearables space.

Apple recently announced that its smartwatch, Apple Watch, will be available on April 24 to customers in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, and Japan. Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, says the device “begins a new chapter in the way we relate to technology.”

The company first announced its device last September to much discussion and fanfare. With the announcement of both Apple Watch and Apple Pay, a solution that integrates hardware, software, and services to allow customers to pay using compatible, NFC (near-field communication)-enabled Apple devices, the company is creating an even larger stake in the M2M and IoT (Internet of Things) industry.

Will Apple Watches one day be as common as iPhones? Will Apple Pay one day be as ubiquitous as credit cards?

Thanks to Apple’s ability to push the boundaries of technology design and innovation, along with its convincing global presence that tends to bring a lot of other companies and customers on board, the Apple Watch and Apple Pay could actually be all they’re cracked up to be in terms of their effect on the market.

For instance, for construction companies holding out on adopting a smartwatch because they weren’t sure whether to spring for a device that serves as a wrist extension of a smartphone, something else, or something in between, the Apple Watch could be the device that lures them into the fold. As Apple Pay acceptance points multiply, businesses that were leery of contactless payments might start assuming everyone else is doing it, so why not try it out too?

While Apple might seem to be a little late to the game with its smartwatch and payments platform, it could also be argued that the game has only just begun. Maybe the game never really starts until Apple says it does.
