February 2013

Prepare for a whole new era in homebuilding. The past few years have been all about using technologies to gain greater efficiencies. The next few years could bring about something entirely different, ushering in an age of innovation for homebuilders. No longer will technology be used as a tool simply to boost business effectiveness. Now it will become a mechanism to help homebuilders be even more creative and differentiate themselves from the competition in a host of new ways.

This trend is already beginning to take hold, as technology providers are coming to market with new solutions for the U.S. housing market. While tried-and-true solutions for project management, bidding and estimating, scheduling, and accounting and job costing, among others, are still at the top of most builders’ tech list, today’s construction companies need the means to access that data easily on mobile devices at the jobsite as well as the ability to easily share pertinent information with trades, suppliers, and other partners. Going even further, many residential homebuilding companies are looking for new ways to attract a buyer and make a sale. Technology is certainly enabling builders to be more innovative in the sales office.

Filtering through many of the technology and software options can be a challenge to say the least, which is why the Constructech Top Products were unveiled in 2008, as a way to help homebuilders identify the top tech options on the market. The hope is this year’s list of Constructech Top Products will help homebuilders identify some of the leading technology solutions available in the residential construction industry today.

Each year the Constructech editors consider a long list of candidates, taking into account the product’s core functionality, as well as new and innovative features. The direction of market trends, such as heightened collaboration and the need for data on connected devices, also helps to shape the criteria to determine which products are truly innovative.

The technology can fall within two categories. New Products are those which have been in the market for less than two years, with a solid technology core and the potential for future growth. Trusted Products are those that have been in the market for at least three years. To win as trusted, products must have a good technology foundation, along with timely enhancements designed to meet the demands of the residential homebuilding industry. Many of these products have also stood the test of time, remaining strong candidates throughout the economic downturn.

As you begin looking to the future and the technology solutions that will inspire you, consider how these Top Products can give you that competitive edge.
