Everyday bottlenecks in a construction business can cause costly barriers to project success. A solution is collaboration technology that provides access to project data. New funding is helping push this forward for construction.

As an example, PlanGrid, www.plangrid.com, San Francisco, Calif., offers mobile technology that enables the construction industry to improve collaboration at the jobsite.

The company recently partnered with Sequoia Capital, www.sequoiacap.com, Menlo Park, Calif., and raised $18 million in series A financing to help fuel the platform’s growth. In addition, this investment also brings Sequoia partner Doug Leone to the PlanGrid board of directors.

The investment will allow PlanGrid to significantly increase its growth and provide more value to its customer base, according to Tracy Young, cofounder and CEO, PlanGrid.

The efficiencies are gained in many ways. Most construction teams carry around dozens of blueprints and other construction documents. These pages require manual replacement by hand each time a change is made, which can result in long delays and cost overruns.

Consolidation is key, and PlanGrid brings together all construction information onto a tablet or smartphone, which empowers engineers, contractors, field workers, and architects to collaborate and efficiently manage projects. Users can access and edit the latest drawings on-the-go and directly communicate with each other from anywhere, helping to ensure projects are built on schedule and under budget.

It’s been imminent. In only three years, PlanGrid’s construction collaboration platform has stored more than 20 million blueprints managed in its cloud-based platform. PlanGrid is used by more than 10,000 customers, including construction firms like Clark Builders Group, Power Designs, and Structure Tone, as well as building owners like Nordstrom, Tishman Speyer, and Sutter Health, and is used to manage more than 200,000 construction projects worldwide.

With the new funding, the company is poised to continue on this growth path, bringing to market a solution the represents the next generation of construction technology.
