Will 2014 be the year your homebuilding company implements new technology to improve business processes and customer relations? Now could be the right time to put new software in place before the market picks up. The challenge is selecting the right system.

Choosing the right workflow management system can be a challenge for construction companies. Many organizations desire a solution in which data can easily flow from one aspect of the business to another. One builder recently made a change to implement a system that is a better fit for its day-to-day needs.

Eastwood Homes, www.eastwoodhomes.com, Charlotte, N.C., operates in six divisions throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Due to growth in the business, the builder needed a better way to manage its 160 employees including 60 jobsite superintendents.

Eastwood turned to a solution from BuilderMT, www.buildermt.com, Lakewood, Colo., a company that provides workflow management solutions for homebuilders. BuilderMT worked with Western Computer, www.westerncomputer.com, Oxnard, Calif., to implement Microsoft Dynamics NAV, an ERP (enterprise resource planning) solution.

The builder was already using BuilderMT for some tasks, and now Eastwood Homes will make use of a new integration between BuilderMT’s WMS (workflow management suite) and Microsoft Dynamics NAV.

According to Kevin Hutchins, CEO of Eastwood Homes, the builder was drawn to the solution because of the integration with Microsoft SQL. The Microsoft Dynamics solution also provides dashboards and allows users to view data in realtime.

Management solutions for the construction industry are on the rise in adoption. According to results from the 2013 Constructech IT Playbook more than 50% of respondents still consider project-management technology to be of high value in their day-to-day operations. This is up slightly from the 47% which indicated the same in the previous survey.

Finding the right system is a vital part of implementing a project-management solution. For builders like Eastwood Homes, partnering with a provider that eased the path proved beneficial.
