Infrastructure construction projects are becoming more complex, which is requiring the use of technology. Take the example of the Tokyo Intl. Airport re-expansion project. In order to meet growing demands, the airport needed to provide additional arrival and departure slots. With limited space, the only option was to build into the sea on an island with a steel jacket-type pier.

In order to perform the detailed design on the airport expansion project, Nippon Steel & Sumikin Engineering,, Tokyo, Japan, used structural analysis and design software from Bentley Systems,, Exton, Pa., to conduct the analysis for the jacket units in just six months.

Automatic calculation of stress concentration factors shortened the time required and material takeoffs allowed quantity estimates to be made immediately. The complex airport project and Nippon Steel & Sumikin Engineering was also recently recognized for its use of the software, winning a Be Inspired Award from Bentley Systems.

As infrastructure construction projects continue to become more comprehensive—such as the project at the Tokyo Intl. Airport—technology and processes such as BIM (building information modeling) can allow project teams to deliver these complex structures in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Additionally, construction technology continues to advance, offering the various project participants the opportunity to use new systems and methods to gather data at the jobsite in a timely manner as well. Many construction-technology providers are coming to market with new apps to streamline processes in the field and the infrastructure construction space is no exception.

Such is the case with the recent InspectTech Collect Mobile app, which can be used initially on the iPad. This new iWare app from Bentley works with Bentley’s InspectTech software. In particular, this will allow asset owners to streamline the process of planning inspections and collecting and managing inspection data.

The company says the app can reduce inspection times by up to 25% and comply with government reporting requirements. For inspectors working on bridges, antenna towers, storm water networks, and more, an app such as this will allow quick collection of information including audio and photos.

For the infrastructure segment of the construction industry, there is a big demand for projects to be delivered on time and on budget. The AEC (architecture, engineering, and construction) project teams working on these types of projects can use construction technology to speed up processes from the early design phases of a project all the way through to processes at the jobsite.
