Having grown from solely a steel erector to become an industrial contractor as well, and with contracts that require highly developed safety programs, this specialty contractor found training an ever expanding employee base challenging on many different levels.
LPR had tried traditional classroom training for skilled positions and found it difficult to reach the entire organization. The legion of instructors needed to train people on many projects throughout the country was unfeasible, and demands on the teachers were grating. Also, costs associated with in-house and onsite training where climbing: transportation, lodging, room rental, and travel time expenses were steep.
LPR determined it needed a better training system, so called upon its IT department to help conceive a better way to train the employee base. After several meetings and brainstorming sessions the IT department came to the table with an idea: what it called a “KnowledgeBox.”
The solution took the form of a waterproof case, outfitted with a fully functional tablet that can be connected to the Internet and serve as a portal to receive instructor-led training sessions. Each self-contained box contains a collection of items, including a keyboard and mouse, a camera and tripod, a speaker/microphone, and a small projector.
In addition to this “kit,” LPR uses 3D printing technology as a training tool, creating props for teaching lessons. Combined with the KnowledgeBox, a training solution to make a better working environment emerged. Remote employees get to see instructors “face to face,” and instructors get to interact with the employee—all while saving time and expense for the company.
