Technology acquisitions continue in the construction industry—and the most recent one in the residential space could indicate changes are on the horizon.

This week, MiTek,, Chesterfield, Mo., a Berkshire Hathaway company and provider of business management and design software, made a big move when it announced it has acquired BuilderMT,, Denver, Colo., a provider of workflow process management software to the residential homebuilding market.

The companies say the acquisition will expand MiTek’s offering of operations workflow solutions for residential production builders.

This isn’t the first acquisition MiTek has made in the construction industry. Previous acquisitions include Simpad’s Blackpoint software and Kova Solutions’ Kova software, which provides the foundation for MiTek’s SAPPHIRE Build software suite for production builders—especially those with a large enterprise-driven environment.

MiTek first announced SAPPHIRE Build early last year. SAPPHIRE Build uses a framework from Kova Solutions, which MiTek acquired back in October 2013, and provides users with an end-to-end solution with tools for options management, workflow and operational management, and collaboration with supply-chain partners.

SAPPHIRE Build is the result of the integration of MiTek Blackpoint software and Kova. The two are now joined together as a single platform, which offers a unified system for sales and marketing, product development, purchasing, production, land management, and customer service.

Could this acquisition signal another new addition to SAPPHIRE Build? Tom Manenti, chairman and CEO, MiTek, says BuilderMT’s configuration and customer base will allow an even wider range of production builders to leverage MiTek’s software, expanding on the SAPPHIRE Build software suite.

Tom Gebes, president, BuilderMT, and the leadership team at BuilderMT will continue to head up the BuilderMT business.
