Mobile Measurements: An App for Accuracy
“Measure twice, cut once,” is conventional wisdom for avoiding costly mistakes when preparing materials for a project. And, one might say, that making sure the measuring method yields an accurate result when specifying materials is an equally important part of the process—for, errors in ordering materials can be expensive and aggravating.
To obtain high-quality measurements, producer of fiber cement siding James Hardie Building Products, www.jameshardie.com, Chicago, Ill., has launched the James Hardie 3D app, an iOS-compatible application to help replacement contractors obtain complete and accurate measurements of siding, trim, soffit, and windows from smartphone photos.
With the snap of a few photos, explains the company, contractors can easily obtain exterior measurements and a 3D rendering of a home—greatly reducing the guesswork of job estimates. And, says the company, with 95% accuracy, the app eliminates the need for manually remeasuring, saving replacement contractors time and money.
“We love the app,” exclaims Paul Trautmann, owner of Timberland Exteriors, www.timberlandexteriors.com, Stillwater, Minn. “I was skeptical of how useful and accurate this program would be, but have found it remarkably accurate.”
Powered by HOVER, www.hover.to, San Francisco, Calif., a mobile platform that generates 3D property measurements from smartphone photos, the James Hardie 3D app makes it easy for contractors to calculate square footage and lineal measurements. Measurements can also be exported as a PDF and emailed from the app.
The app allows users to interchange exterior design elements like windows, as well as more than 20 James Hardie ColorPlus Technology colors, so replacement contractors can give clients an instant visual of their home. With a 360-degree view, users can inspect every element of a home for a preview of the final product.
Members of the James Hardie Contractor Alliance Program, indicates the company, will also receive the lowest price available in the market when using the app, which is free on iTunes, and currently in development for Android.
