The benefits of technology are evident throughout a construction project’s lifecycle—from design and build through operation. For infrastructure projects, software that helps provide data about integrity, performance, and maintenance needs can be critical to ensuring safe and optimal operations.

Bentley Systems,, Exton, Pa., a software provider for advancing the design, construction, and operations of infrastructure, recently announced Network Rail,, London, England, owner and operator of Britain’s rail infrastructure, has won the Asset Management Award at the IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology) Innovation Awards 2014, which celebrate innovations in science, engineering, and technology.

Specifically, Bentley says Network Rail won for its innovative LADS (Linear Assets Decision Support) system, which is powered by Bentley Optram. Bentley describes its Optram technology as an operational performance-modeling system that enables proactive management of linear railway assets.

The LADS system allows Network Rail to coordinate regularly scheduled maintenance and identify problem areas quickly. What’s more, the system integrates and analyzes track data from sensors, inspections, and records, ultimately creating the opportunity for engineers to proactively make the best possible decisions about maintenance needs.

Bentley Systems says it worked with Capgemini,, Paris, France, a consulting, technology, and outsourcing service provider, to help Network Rail create a unified digital view of its sizable rail network by combining more than a dozen data sources with departmental information. LADS is just one part of Network Rail’s overall ORBIS (Offering Rail Better Information Services) plan to integrate asset-management technologies and put quality data at the heart of its decisionmaking.

When efficiency and safety are key, the ability to deliver the right information to the right people at the right time and place can be integral to success. By helping Network Rail deliver a full picture of each section of the track to its engineers, Bentley Systems is contributing to this reality.
