For the construction industry, RFID (radio-frequency identification) and BYOD (bring your own device) can provide value for companies. Now one company is looking to offer both, which could change how business is done in construction.

Enter Atlas RFID Solutions,, Birmingham, Ala., which has launched BYOD initiative for its RFID technology, extending the Jovix mobile solution to consumer devices.

This means clients can leverage existing IT investments, accessing the material data contained within Jovix faster, easier, and at a lower cost. Previous releases of Jovix Mobile were designed for purpose-built, rugged Windows devices. The new HTML5 mobile strategy removes many hardware restrictions, allowing users to access Jovix from any Internet-enabled device.

As a software company, being hardware agnostic is a core strategic tenet of Jovix, says Josh Girvin, senior vice president of product and market strategy, Atlas RFID Solutions. Previously, the company was only able to support Windows tablets with sufficient processing power and storage capacity, he added.

HTML5 enables Jovix to be used on a variety of hardware including inexpensive consumer devices.

Additionally, Atlas will continue to offer the purpose-built Jovix Mobile native Windows application. There are use cases, such as remote locations with poor network availability, where the native application is superior to HTML5, adds Girvin.
