Wind farms and energy projects are receiving more funding across the globe, which is creating a number of jobs in construction and operations and is requiring the use of technology to manage communication across the project lifecycle of the wind farm.

For example, CWP (Continental Wind Partners), www.continentalwind.com, Wilmington, Del., is developing wind farms in Europe, North America, and Australia. In partnership with CEZ Group, www.cez.cz, Prague, Czech Republic, an energy supplier and producer in Europe, CWP is in the process of developing one of Europe’s largest onshore wind farms.

The wind farm—which is located in the Dobrogea region of Romania—will have a capacity of 600 megawatts. Due to the complexity of the construction of the project, CWP estimates throughout the lifecycle of the project thousands of documents and correspondences will need to be shared, tracked, and archived. Like many construction infrastructure projects this will require the use of software to manage processes.

Before the project began, CWP recognized information loss, variation disputes, and miscommunication caused by outdated documents could result in wasted time and money. Due to this, the organization identified software as a key way to create an audit trail of documents and correspondence.

CWP selected Aconex, www.aconex.com, San Bruno, Calif., as the Web-based software to manage communication and documentation on the project. The software enables collaboration across the entire project team and allows each participant to be accountable for the documents they have uploaded.

Adin Pilcer, technical director at CWP moved from Romania to the United Kingdom at the end of the first stage of the project, and due to the technology, Pilcer was able to still easily access, review, and approve documents.

On large construction infrastructure projects such as wind farms and energy projects, software is paramount to improving collaboration and accountability. As these energy projects take off across the globe, technology is going to be the tool that provides access to the same documentation from concept through operations of the wind farms. As these wind farms are being built across the world, it is interesting to watch the role technology is playing on construction of the projects.
