A more mature, sophisticated project delivery system can help position projects for success. On one project, IPD (integrated project delivery) is changing how the team does business.
Recently, Boston Medical Center, www.bmc.org, Boston, Mass., signed a $184 million, single IPD contract agreement with Tocci Building Companies, www.tocci.com, Woburn, Mass., TRO JB, www.trojb.com, Boston, Mass., and Suffolk Construction, www.suffolk.com, Boston, Mass., for its Menino Addition and Renovations project.
The project is part of BMC’s four-year Clinical Campus Redesign and will be done while the hospital remains fully operational. As part of the IPD process, the team is incorporating lean processes to ensure safety and efficiency, reduce project timelines, and eliminate waste and redundancies.
The Menino project comprises the recent demolition of an existing infill building, a new 120,000-sq.ft., addition, 220,000-sq.ft., of renovations to the Menino Pavilion, and construction of a pedestrian bridge with elevator towers at each end. Once open, the expanded facility will feature services for radiology, surgery, emergency and trauma, pharmacy, central sterile processing, interventional procedures, and inpatient care units.
Work on the Menino project is being performed in multiple phases, and the hospital is fully operational. Additionally, the team has integrated early trade contractor support during design under an accelerated scheduling process. And the project team is applying lean design and construction principles to ensure safety and efficiency, reduce project timelines, and eliminate waste and redundancies. As part of the lean, IPD concept, the team is working side-by-side in a co-location facility on the hospital campus. In the collaborative environment of the co-location hub, the team is essential to all design and construction decisions.
The unveiling of the multi-phased Menino Addition and Renovations project is scheduled to be finished in April 2018.
